Dr. Sonny Guild, Director

Sonny directs the Halbert Institute for Missions, teaches undergraduate missions' classes and general education Bible classes. His interests are building and developing strong teams for foreign and domestic missions.

Sonny is the preacher for Woodlawn Church of Christ in Abilene. Before working in Abilene, Sonny served as a missionary among the Abaluyia people in Kenya, Africa for 10 years.  Between stateside service and international missions, he brings more than 40 years of ministry experience to HIM.

Sonny and his wife, Eunice, have 3 children: Christopher, Eric and Theron, 2 daughters-in-law, Susan and Tiffany, and 7 grandchildren.

Dr. Chris Flanders

Graduate School of Theology, Missions


Prior Education:
Abilene Christian University (MA in Missions, M.Div)
Fuller Theological Seminary (Ph.D. Intercultural Studies)

Courses: Missionary Anthropology, Foundations of Missiology, Worldview and Worldview Change, Teaching the Gospel, Planting and Developing Churches

Dr. Flanders spent 10 years doing mission work in Thailand, 7 of those working as a church-planter in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai. He is especially fond of Thai food and Thai fruit.

His research interests include the areas of Face and Facework Theory, the anthropology of social honor and shame, socio-cultural study of the Bible, and Stone-Campbell mission history. His dissertation was on the theological implications of Thai face.

His focus in teaching is on integrating theology and missiology to strengthen systems of student theological and missional formation.

He is married to Cara (Duvall) who works as a marriage and family therapist. They have two children: Autumn and Ethan.

Gary directs the WorldWide Witness internship program and teaches general education Bible as well as campus ministry.

After working in a successful veterinary practice, Gary and his wife Frances moved to Costa Rica for one year of language / cultural training and then to Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela for church planting.  The Greens worked in Venezuela for 8 years.  Today the work consists of three self governing congregations with multiple camps and ministries.

Gary and his wife, Frances, have four children: Travis, Jacob, Jessica and Lucas.

Larry Henderson

Asia Missions Coodrinator

Larry teaches University Seminar and general education Bible classes. He specializes in Asian missions and helps organize the Asian interest groups.

Larry grew up in Bangkok as a missionary kid.  After finishing high school and college in the U.S.A., he returned to Bangkok with his wife Pam.  Together they served as missionaries to Thailand for 24 years before coming back to Abilene Christian University.

Larry and his wife, Pam, have two children: Caleb, Rachel and Jordan, an 11yr old black Labrador.

North America Missions Coordinator

Dr. Smith has ministered for churches in Texas, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Missouri. He has participated in and worked with domestic church plants. He has been active in domestic missions consultations with churches, and has given workshops and presentations in several churches. He is the Missions Coordinator for North America and works with students interested in domestic missions. 

Kent is married to Karen who is a partner in his ministry and travel.
