Sociology
Sociology is the study of how people organize to function as a society. since all human behavior is social, the subject matter of sociology ranges from the intimate family to the hostile mob; from organized crime to religious cults; from the divisions of race, gender and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture; and from the sociology of work to the sociology of sports. In fact, few fields have such a broad scope and relevance for research, theory and application of knowledge.
Sociology in the Workplace
Sociology provides valuable skills for students planning careers in a wide variety of fields including social research, criminology, demography, social psychology, public administration, gerontology, education, rehabilitation, social work and market research. It also provides a strong foundation for those planning to enter law, business, medicine, community planning, architecture and politics. With its emphasis in finding solutions to problems, sociology provides potential employers with employees skilled in evaluation and analysis.
Many undergraduate sociology majors continue in the field and earn the master's degree and doctorate in sociology.
Sociology Concentrations
The Department of Sociology and Family Studies offers two degree plans in sociology.
In the Bachelor of Science in Sociology, students can select from a variety of concentrated tracks of study, including a general professional track, a church service track, a business track and a track in gerontology.
The Bachelor of Science in Sociology with an Emphasis in Criminal Justice prepares students to enter the growing criminal justice/criminology field.
