Working With Faculty
- Graduate assistants work for professors and provide professional services to students and faculty.
- Each graduate assistant is assigned to an instructor, who is responsible for training, supervising and evaluating the assistant in his or her work.
- Specific work assignments are made in late August for the coming year and GA’s are directly responsible to their assigned professor for assignments, work schedule, and daily responsibilities.
Responsibilities
Their major responsibilities fall into three main categories:
- Academic support, including clerical work
- Assisting and involvement in research
- Teaching
Upon employment, they are given letters clearly stating their responsibilities, their remuneration, and the expectations of their department and of the professor to whom they are assigned.
More Important Information
- Graduate assistants are assigned work space, telephones, and mailboxes, as available, usually on a shared basis.
- GA’s are hired to work either 10 or 20 hours per week depending upon their contract.
- Assistantships include compensation for part-time work and a partial tuition remission.
- GA’s are required to take a minimum of nine hours of coursework each semester.
