Shelly Reed currently teaches music for the Abilene Independent Schools at Johnston Elementary and serves as an adjunct voice instructor for Abilene Christian University. Previously she taught voice and directed opera at McMurry University. She holds a Master’s Degree from Indiana University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from West Virginia University Institute of Technology. While in Abilene, Shelly has performed Micaela in Carmen, sung the soprano solos in the Poulenc Gloria, Mozart Solemn Vespers, Handel’s Messiah, Mass in D Minor (Lord Nelson) by Franz Josef Haydn in Lubbock and Abilene, performed as soprano soloist with the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra in their “Gilbert and Sullivan” concert, as well as sung faculty recitals and concerts in Abilene and surrounding areas.
She is an active member of the Texas Music Educators Association, Great Plains Chapter for the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and member of the Texas Collegiate Opera Network, College Music Society and Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity. In addition she is a frequent soloist at local churches and is a member of the Heavenly Rest Episcopal Church where she directs the Westminster Bell Choir. She is also called upon to adjudicate local and regional singing competitions. Before coming to Abilene in January 1995, where toured as Soprano soloist with the Guy Owen Baker Chorale to Poland, Hungry, Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic.
