Benefits to Participants

  • Six hours of graduate credit in school mathematics (two 3 hour courses that are directly connected to the TEKS)
  • Tuition and fees are waived
  • $300 stipend at the completion of the summer institute
  • Approximately $725 in books, manipulatives, and supplies
  • $300 for travel to attend CAMT
  • Limited travel funds to project activities
  • Limited child care funds available for the summer institute
  • Daily lunch during the summer and lunch/dinner provided during academic year sessions
  • Substitutes provided by the school district for the four full-day academic year sessions
  • Build and enhance relationships with other middle school mathematics teachers
Project Activities

The project activities are graded components of two courses at the graduate level in school mathematics.

  • Participate in the summer institute (12 days)
  • Participate in the classroom implementation planning (3 days)
  • Participate in the 9 academic year sessions (6 full days and 3 evenings)
  • Participate in lesson study, a form of professional development, during the academic year
  • Implement project objectives in the classroom
  • Share teaching ideas and occurrences in the classroom
  • Analyze samples of student work
  • Complete other academic activities:
    • Maintain a daily journal during the summer institute
    • Complete daily assignments
    • Write article reviews
    • Complete formal and informal assessments
Instructional Highlights
  • Deepen the understanding of middle school mathematics topics of probability and statistics and make connections to fraction and measurement concepts
  • Analyze and reflect on teach practices through lesson study
  • Gain an understanding of pedagogical methods used in other countries
  • Use technology and the Internet to explore probability and statistics concepts and procedures
  • Explore problems from an activity-based, problem-solving perspective individually and in small group settings

June 5-8 (Monday-Thursday), 1-5 p.m.
June 12-15 (Monday-Thursday), 1-5 p.m.
June 19-22 (Monday-Thursday), 1-5 p.m.
(Lunch is at noon each day)
