City of Abilene Public Relations Internship

The City of Abilene Community Information Office serves as the PR/Advertising/Media Relations hub for the City organization. Divisions and departments for which we provide PR assistance include Keep Abilene Beautiful, Recreation, Police and Fire, Water, Refuse, Recycling Center, Emergency Management, etc. The Community Information Office also has oversight of the City’s Web site, www.abilenetx.com and produces television and radio PSAs for city programs.

Community Information Coordinator Pam Percival’s background includes experience as a news reporter in both print and broadcast media, as well as public relations consulting.

Depending on their skills, prior experience and class work, interns will have the opportunity to gain practical, hands on public relations experience, including writing news releases and public service announcements, as well as helping develop and execute PR/marketing campaigns. Interns who have video shooting/editing/production experience may be able to help write, shoot and produce video PSAs, as well as assist with preparation for Abilene City Magazine, a half-hour news magazine that is a joint project between the city and the Abilene Christian University Journalism and Mass Communications Department. Internships available: Fall, Spring and Summer Terms

$200 educational stipend may be available for student who is interning for JMC class credit.

The internship duties include: researching articles for corporate newsletter, creating/writing/editing content for corporate newsletter, AdvanceTV messaging creation and updates, in-house video production, intranet content creation and updates, conducting and coordinating random weekly/biweekly communications surveys on various tools, capturing and communicating results, and evaluating and recommending new communications approaches based on analysis of as-is and desired states.

We are looking for innovative candidates who can work in a fast paced environment and have strong communication and analytical skills.

Fox/UPN Abilene is looking for students interested in a career in television, but this internship is not limited to broadcast majors; IMC majors should also consider this opportunity.  Duties include station promotion, writing of advertising copy, assisting the sales staff, interaction with promotions and creative personnel, and assisting in the coordination of non-profit and public-service venues.  For information, call Christina at 672-5606 or e-mail her at Christina-foxupn@wtconnect.com. 

The Center for Nonprofit Management in Dallas seeks an intern for an eight-week, paid marketing internship this summer.  Marketing, public relations and journalism degrees preferred.  The student must be returning to school full-time in the fall of 2004 to qualify.  This internship is underwritten by ExxonMobil.  Proficiency in Microsoft Office, PageMaker 6.5 and Microsoft Publisher preferred.  Deadline for applications is April 1.  Visit http://www.cnmdallas.org for details.

The New York Media Experience Program offers mass communication internships in New York City.  This 25-year-old program places students each summer in television, journalism, public relations and advertising internships.  Recent interns have worked for Sports Illustrated, NBC, DDB Worldwide, Weber-Shandwick, Nickelodeon and others.

Greater Lakewood Shepherd’s Center in Dallas is offering a job/internship this summer as a marketing coordinator.  This is a paid ($2,000 for 11 weeks), part-time internship working with an established non-profit agency that caters to senior citizens.  The intern will develop a marketing plan, prepare press releases and develop new marketing materials.  Marketing, public relations or communications background preferred. Deadline for applications is March 26. 

CAMP TV is looking for photography students interested in producing video yearbooks and promotional videos this summer at summer camps throughout the United States.  Students will gain editing experience on Media 100 and Final Cut Pro non-linear systems. The Institute on Political Journalism at Georgetown University offers an eight-week news media internship in Washington, D.C., for students interested in political journalism.  Selected students receive experience in reporting, writing and editing.  Interns take classes at Georgetown University while also working for a media organization in the nation’s capital.  This program is sponsored by The Fund for American Studies.  The deadline to apply for this summer’s program is March 15.  For information, visit http://www.dcinternships.org

Richards-Gravelle, the public relations division of the Richards Group advertising agency in Dallas, uses PR interns each semester – fall, spring and summer.  They will ONLY consider students with public relations, marketing or journalism backgrounds.  Students will experience preferred (relevant summer jobs, other internships, school publications staffs, etc.).  If interested, contact Wendy Dunn, account executive, at dunn@richards.com.
