Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in journalism, the University of Memphis, Memphis, Tenn., May 1975.  Named as the “Outstanding Graduate in Journalism” in my graduating class.  Served as editor of “The Statesman,” the department’s weekly laboratory newspaper.

Teaching and Professional Experience

Instructor, Journalism and Mass Communication Department, Abilene Christian University, January 2002 – present. 

Teach primarily public relations courses but have also taught advertising and journalism courses.  Served as faculty advisor to the PRSSA chapter, 2002-2005 and 2007-present.  Courses taught (or taught in past) include Principles of Public Relations, Principles of Integrated Marketing Communications, Public Relations Writing, Media Tactics, Writing for Electronic Delivery, Integrated Marketing Communications Campaigns, Internship Seminar, News Reporting, Basic News Writing and Media Messages.  Also serve as director of the department’s student internship program.  

Director of Investor Relations and Corporate Communications, First Financial Bankshares, Abilene, Texas, January 2004-present. 

Manage external communications with the news media, shareholders and investment analysts for First Financial Bankshares, a regional bank holding company traded on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol FFIN.  Responsibilities include writing news releases, maintaining content on the corporate Web site, producing the annual report to shareholders, managing media relations, managing corporate disclosure of material information, interacting with institutional investors and analysts, and arranging for road trips, conferences and other investor marketing events, and monitoring competitive intelligence within the banking and financial services industry.

Free-lance writer and copy desk assistant, The Abilene Reporter-News, Abilene, Texas, 2003-present.  Write a monthly column on public relations tips for small businesses and work periodically as a substitute copy editor.

Director of Investor Relations, Sensormatic Electronics Corporation, Boca Raton, Fla., January – December 2001.  Managed relationships between the company and its shareholders and analysts.  This included writing news releases, overseeing the annual report, participating in conference calls and visits with investors, and responding to inquiries from investors. Sensormatic was acquired by Tyco Inc. in September 2001.

Investor Relations Manager, Delhaize America Corporation, Salisbury, N.C., December 1997-December 2000.  Delhaize America is a major supermarket retailer that owns the Food Lion, Hannaford Bros. and Sweetbay grocery store brands.  The Brussels-based Delhaize Group acquired Delhaize America in late 2000 and its stock ceased trading on the U.S. markets.  Duties in this position similar to those at Sensormatic Electronics. 

Senior Account Executive, Price/McNabb, Inc., Charlotte, N.C., 1995-1997.  Served on the investor relations/corporate communications team for this integrated marketing communications agency, which is now the Charlotte office of Eric Mower & Associates.   Public relations clients included Lance, Inc., Shiloh Industries, Summit Properties, Duke Energy and Digital Recorders. 

Account Executive, Dye, Van Mol & Lawrence, Nashville, Tenn., 1991-1995.  Served on the investor relations/corporate communications team for this public relations agency, which at the time was the second-largest independent PR agency in the Southeast.  Clients included Quorum Health Group, A+ Communications, Shoney’s Restaurants, GENESCO Corp. and the Willis Group.
