JMC Students have the opportunity to work in their chosen field of study.

Internship Central

Internships provide students with real-world experience to complement what they learn in the classroom.  All majors in the Journalism and Mass Communication Department must complete a 160-hour internship and a one-credit-hour seminar course, JMC 495.

We believe in the value of internships.  Student interns are introduced to workplace expectations, receive professional mentoring and get a chance to test their job skills and knowledge.  Each year, JMC students participate in internships in Abilene and in cities throughout the state and nation.  Recent interns have gone to New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Nashville, Tenn., Chicago and Cincinnati.  The major metro markets in Texas -- Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Houston and San Antonio – are all popular locations for internships.  Internships aren’t limited to the United States.  Recent students have interned in diverse international locations from England to Thailand.

Information for Students

Most students take their internship during their junior or senior year.  Internships are available during the school year with media, agencies, corporations and non-profit organizations in Abilene.  However, many students plan internships for the summer.  You are required to complete only one internship for JMC credit, but students are encouraged to do two or more internships in order to strengthen their professional experience and gain valuable contacts.

You must also complete a one-credit-hour internship course, JMC 495.  We recommend that you take this course in the semester prior to starting your internship.  You will learn skills that will help you with internships and entry-level jobs, such as resume writing and interviewing techniques.

Information for Employers

JMC students consistently receive rave reviews from internship employers.  If you are an employer in an organization that could use students with skills in journalism (print or broadcast), electronic media, integrated marketing communications (public relations and advertising) or photography, then we’d love to hear from you.  All we ask of you is that you (1) provide students with varied and substantive work experiences that will help them apply their JMC skills, (2) offer professional mentoring or supervision by a qualified supervisor, and (3) be willing to complete a few short forms, including a contract form and mid-term and final evaluation forms.

For more information, or to send us an announcement about an internship opportunity, please write Dave Hogan, internship program director, at dave.hogan@acu.edu, or call him at 325-674-2045.
