JMC 100 Media Issues (3-0-3), fall, spring. An introduction to media, examining their impact on society and individuals. [JMC Core] 

JMC 102 Creating Media Messages (3-0-3), fall, spring. The understanding and practice of writing messages for mass media, focusing on the purpose, design, format, and audiences of written media messages and an introduction to critical thinking. Prerequisites: GPSproficiency as defined in departmental requirements. [JMC Core]

JMC 111 Announcing (3-3-3), fall, spring. Develops basic verbal skills necessary to communicate on the-air effectively. Areas of concentration will include phonetic skills, proper diction, pronunciation, simultaneous announcing, equipment usage, and FCC rules for operator practices. Required lab grade must be "C" to pass course. [Broadcast Journalism]

201 Introduction to Visual Media (3-1-3), fall, spring, summer. Principles and practice of visual communication including the use of digital photography, digital video production, multimedia and Web site design. Students will analyze and practice creative content develpment for new media journalism using established industry tools and techniques. Prerequisites: JMC 100, 102. There is a course fee of $25 that will be charged to students' accounts.

JMC 223 Basic News (3-3-3), fall, spring. A study of the nature of news; the reporter's three-fold role of reporting, researching, and writing; and the basic news forms for print and broadcast media. Prerequisites: JMC 102, GPS and Typing Exam requirements as stated in departmental requirements. [Journalism]

JMC 233 Introduction to Photography (3-3-3), fall, spring. In depth introduction to the basic principles of photography with emphasis upon shooting assignments, processing film, making quality prints, and digital editing. Students must own a manual 35mm camera. Passing grade in the lab portion of the class is necessary to pass course. Same as ITEC 467. Prerequisite: JMC 102

JMC 234 Advanced Photography (3-3-3), fall. A study of the principles of photography with emphasis upon shooting assignments for mass media, criticizing and editing photographs, processing film, making quality prints, and digital image editing. Students must own a manual 35mm SLR camera. Prerequisites: JMC 100, 102, 201. [Photojournalism] 

JMC 239 Writing for Electronic Delivery (3-1-3), fall, spring. An active study of the creation of messages for delivery in various electronic forms. Emphasis placed on news values, journalistic style and media ethics.

JMC 260 Television Studio Production (3-3-3), fall, spring. An introduction to TV studio production including the operation of studio cameras, switchers and video recording. This course will cover lighting, studio audio, video graphics, set design, program editing and production. Prerequisites: JMC 100, 102, 201. JMC 301 Principles of Integrated Marketing Communication (3-0-3), fall, spring. Survey of the principles of advertising, public relations, sales promotion, and their interaction with each other and with management, emphasizing ways businesses and other organizations promote their products, services and images to various publics. Same as MKTG 301. [IMC]  

JMC 310 Interactive Media (3-0-3), fall, spring. The understanding and practice of mediated, digital messages, especially focusing on the purpose, design, format, and audiences of these types of messages for self-paced and group learning. Prerequisites: JMC 233, 260. [JMC Core]

JMC 317 Electronic Media Principles (3-3-3), fall, spring. An examination of electronic media principles, covering such topics as history, technology, regulation, news, advertising, programming, audience research, business practices, social impact, ethics, and careers. Lab requires working with the campus radio and television stations. Required lab grade must be C to pass course. [Electronic Media]

JMC 324 Reporting (3-3-3), fall. A study of newspaper journalism with an emphasis on public affairs reporting, public opinion surveys, ethics, and laboratory work on the student newspaper. Required lab grade must be "C" to pass course. Prerequisite: JMC 201, 223. [Journalism]  

JMC 333 Photojournalism (3-3-3), spring, even years. Study of the use of the camera and photographs to report and tell a story in the media. Extensive laboratory experience. Required lab grade must be "C" to pass course. Prerequisite: JMC 234. [Photojournalism]

JMC 341 Copy Editing (3-3-3), fall. Principles and practice of copy editing, headline writing, and photo editing. Required lab grade must be "C" to pass course. Prerequisite: JMC 324. [Journalism]

JMC 342 Publication Design (3-0-3), fall, spring. Principles and practices of typography, graphic journalism, and publication design. Required lab grade must be "C" to pass course. [JMC Core]

JMC 360 Television Field Production (3-3-3), fall, spring. A course in television field production including the operation of professional ENG cameras and linear and non-linear editors. Students will produce program segments suitable for airing on local stations, or for video and Web distribution. Prerequisite: JMC 260.  There is a course fee of $50 that will be charged to students' accounts.

JMC 364 Media and Religion (3-0-3), on demand. A study of the interaction of media and religion and the use of media by religious groups, with varying emphases depending upon current events and student needs.

JMC 390 Creativity and Copywriting (3-0-3), fall. Creativity, ideation, market analysis, campaign creativity, and creative direction, creative writing, copy writing. Prerequisite: JMC 301. [IMC] Class syllabus

JMC 391 Media Strategies (3-0-3), fall. An analysis of the use of media in advertising, sales promotion campaigns, and publicity campaigns. Emphasis on planning concepts, strategy development, product and target analysis, budgeting, audience measurement, buying tactics, plan writing, and media relations. Prerequisite: JMC 301. JMC 392 Integrated Media Tactics (3-0-3), fall. A study of tactics used in the creation of integrated marketing communication campaigns, including publicity writing, event planning, development of collateral, and press conferences. Prerequisite: JMC 301 or MKTG 378. [IMC] 

JMC 405 Visual Portfolio (1-0-3), on demand. Designed for the senior photojournalism or electronic media major under collaborative instruction from an advisor or mentor for the preparation of a visual portfolio that showcases the studen's talents and abilities in the field of mass communication. Prerequisite: senior standing, JMC 233, 333 or 452 [Photojournalism or Electronic Media]

JMC 417/517 History of Mass Media (3-0-3), on demand. Survey of the history of print and electronic media, with special emphasis upon prominent individuals and events and religious periodicals. The media are related to their political, economic, and social contexts in America.

JMC 418/518 Theory of Mass Communication (3-0-3), on demand. An investigation of the current theories and principles of mass media and mass media ethics. Prerequisite: Junior standing.

JMC 438 Broadcast News (3-3-3), spring. A study of news gathering, writing, and production for broadcast. Lab work includes news preparation and presentation on the campus radio or television station. Required lab grade must be "C" to pass course. Prerequisites: JMC 360 and 324. [Broadcast Journalism]

JMC 449/549 Opinion Writing (3-0-3), fall, odd years. A theoretical and practical study of the editorial and column in the news media. Emphasis on critical thinking and writing about current problems. Prerequisites: JMC 324 or 338 or permission of instructor. [Journalism]

JMC 450/550 Feature Writing (3-0-3), spring, even years. A study of newspaper and magazine feature articles. Emphasis on identifying subjects, research, interviewing, and writing. Prerequisite: JMC 324 or 338 or permission of instructor. [Journalism] Class syllabus

JMC 451/551 Electronic Publishing (3-3-3), fall, spring. A conceptual and practical study of the principles and tools of electronic publishing. A passing grade in the lab portion of the class is necessary to pass the course. Prerequisite: JMC 201, 342. [JMC Core] Class syllabus (PDF) (Lewis)

JMC 488 Communication Law (3-0-3), spring. Freedom and responsibility of print and broadcast media ethically and legally. First Amendment principles and legal philosophy affecting the media and employees. Prerequisite: junior standing. [JMC Core] 

JMC 492 Integrated Marketing Campaigns (3-0-3), spring. Specifics of organizing and conducting integrated marketing campaigns, including advertising, publicity, selling, planning, presentation, execution, follow-up, client relations, and account management. Prerequisites: JMC 390, 391, 392. Same as MKTG 492. [IMC]  

JMC 495 Internship (0-0-1), all semesters. On-the-job training for a minimum of 160 hours under the student's JMC adviser and a supervisor at the internship site. Prerequisites: Senior standing as a JMC major and approval by the adviser. [JMC Core]
