This page is for students of beginning German at ACU. You should be able to work with these concepts by the end of the first semester.

Sentences
- Kinds of Sentences
  - Declaratives (verb in second position)
    - Ich lerne gern Deutsch.
    - Am Montag gehen wir schwimmen.
  - Interrogatives
    - Gehst du in die Stadt? (yes/no, verb in first position)
    - Wohin gehst du? (question word, verb in second position)
  - Imperatives
    - Geh jetzt weg! (informal, singular, verb in first position)
    - Geht jetzt weg! (informal, plural, verb in first position)
    - Gehen Sie jetzt weg! (formal, verb in first position)
    - Gehen wir jetzt weg! (first person plural [let's], verb in first position)
    - Nicht rauchen! (impersonal)
- Forms of Sentences
  - Simple sentences: one subject and verb (the subject or the verb may be compound)
    - Ich fahre in die Schweiz.
    - Mein Mann und ich fahren von Deutschland nach Italien.
    - Er liest ein Buch und schaut ein Basketball spiel an.
  - Compound sentences: two simple sentences combined with a coordinate conjunction (und, aber, oder, denn, sondern)
    - Jetzt gehen wir in die Stadt, und später sehen wir einen Film an.
    - Ich habe keinen Hunger, denn ich habe viel zu Mittag gegessen.
  - Complex sentences: a simple sentence and a subordinate clause connected with a subordinate conjunction (verb on subordinate clause is at the end)
    - Ich weiß nicht, ob ich ins Kino gehe.
    - Er weiß, dass er nicht mitkommt.
Verb Tenses
- Present
  - Heute liest sie ein Buch.
  - Wir kommen morgen zurück.
- Future (don't use it unless no adverb expresses the future)
  - Ich werde das Buch lesen. BUT Ich lese das Buch morgen.
  - Sie wird kommen. BUT Sie kommt morgen.
- Preterite (use with haben, sein, and modals)
  - Sie hatte kein Geld bei ihr.
  - Er war gestern krank.
  - Ich wollte mit ihm sprechen.
- Present Perfect (use in conversation with all other verbs)
  - Ich bin gestern mitgekommen.
  - Er hat ihn gestern gesehen.

Time Phrases
Remember that you can write declarative and interrogative sentences in all three tenses. But imperatives do not have tenses. You can use the modals in all kinds of sentences except imperatives. You can use separable prefix verbs in all kinds of sentences.
