Work of literature, art or music you would recommend: Ralph Vaughn Williams, Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis

Person who influenced your life: Professor Lorraine Sherley of the TCU English department. She had enormous gusto for literature and the arts, would not accept a second-rate effort, and was patient with a self-conscious kid from the prairie.

Why you do what you do: I teach college English and direct the Honors Program as a way to pass on the blessings I had at TCU and the University of North Carolina.

What you want to give your students: The same excitement and rigor and confidence my professors gave me.

What you expect from your students: From General Education students (non-English majors), I expect responsibility, attention to instructions, good humor, and openness to new ideas and analytical thinking. From English majors, I expect enthusiasm for literature, willingness to read a lot of material, and a determination to do high quality work.

Why you are at ACU: I’m here providentially. And glad to be here.

Outside interests: Travel in Ireland and England.

Personal: My wife Sharon is a family nurse practitioner with Hendrick Medical Center. We have three grown children and one grandchild. We attend the University Church of Christ.
