Students following these tracks must earn at least half of their graduate work in 600-level courses. They must also take a comprehensive written examination over an approved reading list during their final semester. Finally, they must take an oral examination over their thesis or, if they choose a nonthesis track, over their area of concentration and written comprehensive exam. Students choosing the nonthesis tracks must also submit a portfolio of course papers, chosen in consultation with the English graduate adviser.
