Student Opportunities
ACU students receive undergraduate research opportunities unparalleled by other engineering and physics programs. Not only do our undergraduate students participate in faculty-guided research - a privilege reserved for graduate students and doctoral candidates at most universities - but they do so in collaboration with post-doctoral researchers and internationally renowned physicists at national laboratories.
Each summer, teams of ACU undergraduate students work at institutions such as Brookhaven National Laboratory, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. ACU students also enjoy internship-research opportunities with industry leaders such as Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corp. and medical physics internships with the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Additional projects include those with ACU professors including Dr. Tim Head in his Phonon Imaging Lab and with Dr. Josh Willis and his LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) research work on campus throughout the year and in Germany over the summer.
ACU undergraduate students receive national recognition for their work, as they are listed as co-authors on some of the most-cited papers on nuclear physics, and as they present at venues such as the Conference Experience for Undergraduates (CEU), held during the annual meeting of the American Physical Society's Division of Nuclear Physics.
Engineering and physics students at ACU form a tight-knit community of Christians and scholars, who gather with their peers and professors for events of intellectual, spiritual and social value. Membership in ACU's chapter of the Society of Physics Students opens our students to opportunities for game nights, get-togethers, professional development, conference presentations, chapel meetings and other activities.
