Preparing students for careers in biology and health sciences
In the department of biology at ACU, we provide a broad curriculum to prepare students for research and advanced training in field and laboratory biology. We also offer sound training for those students interested in becoming pre-college teachers of biology, coordinating with the Department of Teacher Education to provide top-quality teacher training as well as biology training. Finally, we provide pre-health curriculum support for students entering schools of medicine, dentistry, public health and other pre-health professions. The study of biology also enables students to better appreciate the creation and our roles as stewards and caretakers.

Special opportunities for field studies and medical missions are available. We offer opportunities for field courses both locally and in Honduras. We are also a participating college with the Au Sable Institute. The field courses offered at Au Sable are in the beautiful north woods country of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula and on Whidbey Island in Puget Sound between Vancouver and Seattle. Our opportunities for medical missions are available through Health Talents International and typically center in Guatemala. Contact the department for the details about these special opportunities; there are costs for travel, room and board.
The Au Sable mission fits ACU’s mission and the biology department’s mission by enabling us to prepare students for Christian service and leadership as biological scientists in field biology. Au Sable’s mission is “the integration of knowledge of the creation with biblical principles for the purpose of bringing the Christian community and the general public to a better understanding of the Creator and the stewardship of God’s Creation.” Thus, our participation with Au Sable provides an opportunity to expand biological knowledge into an environmental ethic that calls us to redefine “dominion” as stewards and caretakers of Creation.
Health Talents International (HTI) and the ACU Department of Biology have had a long-term relationship that provides our students with the opportunity to serve in medical missions. Their mission matches our own by enabling us to provide Christian service and leadership as health-care professionals throughout the world. HTI’s mission is “to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ through teaching and healing ministries.” Therefore, our participation with Health Talents International provides students an opportunity to blend faith and learning in an applied manner that serves the spiritual and physical health needs of others throughout the world.
