Experiential Learning
  • What is it?

The Bachelor of Applied Studies recognizes that learning occurs in many social interaction contexts.  BAS has a mechanism that allows adult students the opportunity to earn college credit for learning acquired outside the classroom.  This mechanism is called Prior Learning Assessment.

  • How much college credit can I earn?

Up to 24 hours can be earned through this process.

  • How does it work?

At ACU, students are assisted in the Prior Learning Assessment process through the APST 324 Portfolio Preparation course.  This course is designed to help identify previous learning worthy of college credit.  Course instructors work individually with students to create an academic portfolio.  Trained faculty assessors then evaluate the portfolio at the completion of the course.

  • How much does it cost?

Students may gain up to 24 hours of credit for the cost of one course (APST 324) plus a $200 evaluation and transcription fee.

  • Are there other benefits?

The portfolio process accelerates degree completion by allowing students to meet learning outcomes for up to eight courses without having to attend class sessions for those courses.
