B.S. in Animal Science
Animal Science majors gain scientific and practical education by combining classroom and laboratory experiences. This provides needed training for production and management on the farm or ranch, as well as for advanced scientific study leading to research or teaching. This program offers a variety of tracks, designed to meet the educational needs of students pursuing a broad range of animal science-related interests and careers.
The B.S. in Animal Science offers your choice of the following concentrations:
Pre-veterinary Medicine and Health Sciences — The pre-veterinary medicine and health sciences track satisfies requirements for admission to veterinary or graduate school, for related medical technical fields, and for graduate study in animal nutrition, breeding and physiology. Examples of courses include nutrition, companion animals, animal health and animal reproduction.
Animal Industry and Business — Students are introduced to the business side of animal science, which has unlimited career opportunities in agribusiness. This option emphasizes preparation for management positions in the production and marketing of animal agribusiness products. Particular emphasis is given to agribusinesses needing animal expertise as part of their management or marketing team. Courses include livestock production, food and fiber marketing, accounting, and commodity markets
Animal Production Emphasis: The production emphasis incorporates the knowledge and skills needed to produce, manage and care for livestock. It is concerned with production of ruminant and monogastric livestock, as well as companion animals. Individuals entering this area will become knowledgeable in several areas of animal science. They will have excellent management skills and be prepared to become the future managers of domestic livestock and companion animals.
Rangeland Ecology Emphasis: This emphasis prepares students to manage wild and domestic animals and their habitats. At the end of the program, students will be qualified for immediate employment with government agencies, commercial livestock operations and environmental consulting organizations. Opportunities also exist for students to pursue graduate work in related fields. In this program, students will study rangeland management in terms of the interactions between plants, livestock and wildlife and how grazing systems influence management.
Biotechnology Emphasis: The field of biotechnology has emerged as a major contributor to the advancement of agriculture, medicine, and environmental sciences. The biotechnology curriculum is designed to provide students with fundamental knowledge and laboratory skills in biotechnology and molecular biology, and a firm foundation in biology and the physical sciences. The primary objectives of this emphasis are to educate students for positions in the biotechnology industry or to prepare them for graduate/professional study in the life sciences.
Research Emphasis: This emphasis is designed for students interested in graduate school or other careers requiring a strong science background. It prepares students to conduct independent research and quantitative analysis in a chosen discipline of interest. This option gives students an opportunity to present their work at various national forums and to publish their research in refereed journals, and direct involvement in research will allow undergraduate students to gain specific research skills.
