Dr. Kent Gallaher has been around agriculture his entire life. He is a Tennessee native but spent much of his school age years in Gainesville Florida where his father was a professor of agronomy at the University of Florida. From a very early age he learned how to connect irrigation equipment and how to set up “split block research plots” at the university farms. In addition to his early “research work”, Dr. Gallaher has done most everything associated with a livestock farm from hay to fence to working cattle, and as a teenager, he even spent one summer picking watermelons in Wiliston Florida.
Kent married the former Marsha Fort on July 26, 1985. They have been blessed with two sons, Andrew (b. 1993) and Austin (b. 1994), both of whom attend the Abilene Christian School. Outside of family and work Dr. Gallaher enjoys Tennessee Volunteer Football and Bluegrass and contemporary Christian music. But most of all, he is a huge racquetball enthusiast, having played in tournaments and for recreation for over 25 years.
Kent has a doctorate in Plant Science from the University of Tennessee. Prior to coming to ACU, he was on the Biology faculty of Lipscomb University, where he was the director of Lipscomb's interdisciplinary program in Environmental Science. Here at ACU he is heavily involved in updating our own Environmental Science program, developing curriculum and recruiting students. His main research interests revolve around appropriate agricultural production technology for peasant farmers in Central America. Projects include utilization of composted animal manures in place of commercial fertilizers and evaluation of open pollinated field corn varieties for grain and silage yields in Honduras. Whether in class, on the farm, at home, or even on the court, Dr. Gallaher consistently strives to be the man that God has called him to be. He is a Godly man who is committed to Christian education and who truly loves his role as teacher and Christian mentor.
