Dr. Foy Mills, Jr. is a teacher/advisor in the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at ACU. He also serves as department chair and is a very capable and qualified professional. However, there is a side of him outside of school that many of us don’t often realize exists. There are some things very important to him other than economics and peanuts.
Dr. Mills lives in Abilene with his wife of 27 years, Mitzi. She owns and operates Your Home, Inc. by Mitzi Mills, a residential construction business in Abilene. He has two daughters, Whitney, who lives in Sugar Land, Texas, with her husband, Joshua Kasinger and son, Jordan; and Lydsey. Whitney is a 2004 ACU graduate and stay-at-home mom, and Joshua is the youth and worship minister for the Sugar Grove Church of Christ. Lindsey is a 2006 graduate of Lubbock Christian University, Dr. Mills’ undergraduate alma mater, and is currently pursuing her master’s degree.
Dr. Mills has an extensive background in agriculture. He grew up on the family cotton farm in Anton, Texas on the Southern High Plains. At Anton High School, he was very involved in FFA, receiving his Lone Star Farmer Degree in 1976. He was chapter secretary and president, and also served as district president.
In addition to these roles, he gained leadership experience as student body president. He also played on a state-ranked basketball team, ran hurdles and the relays on the track team and was drum major of his high school band.
Spending much of his time in an office staring at a computer, Dr. Mills likes to spend time in the yard once in awhile and do some landscaping. He said that he finds this very relaxing and it gives him the opportunity to see the fruits of his labor. He also plays golf, “kind of.” He mentioned that he enjoys keeping up with high school and college football because these guys play for the love of the game.
Most of his “non-professional” activity has to do with his involvement in church. He and Mitzi worship at HOPE Church of Christ were he has served as a shepherd. HOPE is a church plant striving to meet the needs of people looking for Jesus who might find it frightening to go to a large, more established church. Dr. Mills was very involved in its beginning.
Dr. Mills and his family have also been very involved in mission trips to the Texas Valley and to New Mexico. Every aspect of Dr. Mills’ life is centered in his relationship with the Lord. From teaching at a Christian University, to working for JLA Global – a Christian based corporation, to serving a church and guiding his family in a Godly walk, everything ties to Jesus. Nearly all of his time off from work is invested in his family and in church, which are often one and the same.
