2008 DTA Convention
The 49th annual Delta Tau Alpha national convention was held on the campus of Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS, March 27-29, 2008. DTA is the national honor society of agriculture recognized among "non land grant colleges and universities". There are currently 35 DTA chapters scatted across the USA, the ACU chapter was chartered in 1961. This year Dr. Kent Gallaher accompanied a delegation of seven students to the national convention. Student delegates included Environmental Science majors Timber Barkley from Gruver, Texas, Dylan Wann and Alex Wann from Torrington, Wyoming, and Kendra Gregory from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Animal Science majors Katie Kirkpatrick from Richardson, Texas, Roberta Eisenhower from Abilene, Texas, and Cason McInturff from Franklin, Tennessee.
This year the ACU collegiate quiz bowl team placed third, making it all the way to the semi-final round where they were upended by Eastern Kentucky University. Nevertheless Dylan, Cason, and Katie represented A&E with distinction, and the third place finish is ACU’s highest placing in many years.
The ACU delegation also participated in tours of the Land Institute and Great Plains Farm Machinery Corporation. While at the Land Institute our students participated in a discussion on the viability and usefulness of perennial row crops and toured greenhouses where they saw experimental cultivars of several perennial row crop hybrids, most notably of wheat, corn, and sorghum. At Great Plains, students toured the production facility where both non-till drills and grass seeders are manufactured. Students saw the entire process from raw steel to finished drills coming right off of the assembly line. The production tour was followed by a Q/A session with the GP Director of Marketing. Both tours were very informative and interesting.
At the Awards Banquet, ACU was presented with the highest attendance award which recognizes the chapter with the highest percentage of active members in attendance at the national convention. It is also note worthy that Mr. Cason MacInturff was elected to the DTA national council as the Vice President of the Southern Region. A&E congratulates Cason on this accomplishment and extends best wishes to him as he works this year to help the southern region schools live up to the DTA motto, "Dedicated to Agriculture"!
