A&E Travel to NACTA 2009

Dr. Ed Brokaw, Dr. Florah Mhlanga, Prof Emmett Miller, Cason McInturff (ANSC, Sr.) and Dr. Foy Mills, Jr. attended the 55th Annual North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture Conference hosted by Oklahoma State University in June 2009.  The conference’s theme, “Making Assessment Work for You,” was timely as ACU approaches its Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) accreditation visit in 2010-2011.

In a pre-conference session, Dr. Brokaw met with representatives of the Consortium of Agriculture Programs at Independent Colleges and Universities (CAPICU) of which A&E is a member.  At the meeting’s conclusion, CAPICU board members agreed to partner with, and participate in, NACTA’s annual conference.  A&E will host the CAPICU contingent at ACU for additional meetings in fall 2009.

Cason McInturff, one of the eight students participating in A&E’s Study Abroad experience in Honduras in May 2008, delivered a selected oral presentation, “Student Performance and Reflection on a Study Abroad Program in a Developing Country.”  His presentation and presence (only undergraduate student presenter) were well received.  Co-authors of the presentation were Drs. Mhlanga and Mills, and Prof Miller.

During the conference, Cason had an opportunity to visit with graduate faculty in Animal Science at Oklahoma State and to later visit the School of Veterinary Medicine.  We also had the opportunity to host Brenna Ellison (AGRB, 2008) who is completing her MS in Agricultural Economics at Oklahoma State.  She plans to begin her Ph.D. in January 2010.  She also informed us during our visit of the acceptance for publication of her first journal article.

The conference concluded with an array of workshops for conferees.  Dr. Mills led the sessions, “NACTA Teaching Awards Workshop- 2009,” with Dr. Bob Stephenson- Fort Hays State University, Dr. Bonnie Walters- University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Dr. Prasanta Kalita- University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Dr. Jeannette Moore- North Carolina State University.

A&E faculty look forward to participating in next year’s conference hosted by Pennsylvania State University.
