Sustainability at ACU

We’re all on God’s Earth together, and Abilene Christian University is doing its part to conserve energy and resources on our little corner of the planet by adding some green to our purple.

ACU Green’s mission is to:

  • Promote a culture of sustainability and sustainable practices
  • Promote prudent stewardship of resources
  • Ensure that future generations of ACU students can enjoy God’s creation

When you arrive on campus, you’ll see many green initiatives in action and many others are behind-the-scenes. Our sustainability efforts include conserving energy with efficient HVAC, plumbing and lighting systems and saving on fuel by using electric carts on campus rather than full-size vehicles.

Student-led Sustainability Initiatives

ACU Unplugged

The eleven residence halls compete for the greatest energy saving during a 10-day period. Each residence hall’s energy usage is measured during the competition period and compared with the hall’s energy use the previous fall. The hall with the greatest percentage reduction wins. In the process, students become more aware of smart energy usage. For more information, contact the coordinators at

Each fall when students move into campus residence halls, they bring a tremendous amount of cardboard. The Box-to-Bin program redirects this cardboard to recycling bins and encourages new students to adopt green practices. For more information, contact the coordinators at

When residence halls are being vacated in the spring, Recyclemania gives students an opportunity to donate goods, swap T-shirts and recycle paper and plastic. Recyclemania is completely student-run. For more information, contact the Year-End Committee in the Student Organizations office.
