Several sessions at Abilene Christian University’s annual Summit will tackle the topic of immigration at the southern U.S. border, a particularly relevant subject for Texans. This pathway within Summit includes webinars, an e-book, a film and a related art exhibit that will be available online as of Sept. 21.
Summit, ACU’s annual conference on faith and spirituality, will take place virtually this year and includes four theme speakers as well as 12 different pathways, each with a specific focus related to the overall theme “Blessed Are the Peacemakers.”
In the “Peacemaking on the Southern Border” pathway, Christians from the Texas borderland and heartland will offer perspectives, current realities and ways to engage the challenging cultural topic.
Speakers include Dylan Corbett, executive director of Hope Border Institute in El Paso; Jenifer Wolf-Williams, assistant professor at ACU Dallas; Sr. Norma Pimentel, executive director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley; and Elizabeth Alvarez-Bingham, chief of the Election Litigation and Immigration Division of Guest & Gray attorneys. A bonus session features Mark Hamilton, Onstead Professor of Old Testament at Abilene Christian University.
An exhibit by photographer Tom Kiefer, “El Sueño Americano | The American Dream,” will be on display in ACU’s Brown Library and virtually. The work is part of Kiefer’s ongoing project of the same name. Kiefer has arranged and photographed personal belongings of migrants that were seized and trashed by border officials in Ajo, Arizona. Moved by the stories these objects embody, Kiefer commemorates them in portrait-like photographs. The artwork will be on display in the library from Sept. 20 through Oct. 20 or can be viewed virtually through the Summit website.
The pathway will also include The Evangelical Immigration Table’s 2014 film The Stranger, available for viewing through the Summit website.
