Alexa Lopez spotlight
"I discovered a new chapter in my life," writes ACU freshman Alexa Lopez in her blog for Seventeen magazine. "A chapter full of new friendships ... successfully washing my clothes alone, sporting a fabulous zebra print dorm room, and having a blast at the first football game."
Alexa, a nursing major from San Antonio, is one of 15 freshman women from U.S. colleges who won a nationwide contest to blog for the magazine. Known collectively as the "Freshman 15," the women post photos and updates about their experiences on the site, and answer readers' questions about the college experience. Lopez and the other Freshman 15 bloggers also are featured in the December/January issue of Seventeen.
"When making my decision, my friends and family always asked me, 'Why Abilene Christian University?' or 'Where's Abilene?' I sometimes felt as if I had to second guess myself or that no one supported my college decision," Alexa writes. "But as I settled into my dorm, progressed through Welcome Week, started my classes, and set off my independence, I recalled why I picked Abilene Christian University; I picked it for myself. I wanted to make my 'when I grow up...' a reality here."
Alexa notes the transition of moving from the second-largest city in Texas to much-smaller Abilene poses some challenges, but "the small town atmosphere and sense of Wildcat pride feels like a new home to me now," she says.
