Alcatel-Lucent, a global leader in broadband networking and IP technology, announced that Abilene Christian University is one of four winners of its first-ever Dynamic Enterprise Award. ACU was selected for this award from a field of hundreds of companies globally for its innovative communications solution that enhances the learning experience for today’s higher education students. In addition to this recognition, ACU was also selected by a panel of top-ranking industry analysts as the winner of the Dynamic Enterprise Analyst Choice Award.
Alcatel-Lucent president Tom Burns announced the Dynamic Enterprise Awards and the Analyst Choice Award at the nineteenth annual Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Forum before an audience of more than 3,500 international journalists, industry analysts, and Alcatel-Lucent customers and business partners. ACU is the first university or non-profit organization to receive this award.
“The winning organizations vary dramatically in the services they deliver and people they serve, but all of them built world-class networks that have made a dramatic impact by enabling better communications either within the organization or with their various stakeholders,” said Tom Burns. “Abilene Christian University impressed us with the innovative way they used technology to integrate applications and web-based services through mobile devices to make them an intricate tool for everyday learning, inside and outside of the classroom, through course calendars, homework alerts and the ability to answer in-class surveys and quizzes.”
ACU’s mobile learning initiative is a university-wide project that began in fall 2008 with the distribution of iPhones and iPod Touches to incoming freshman in order to offer a completely innovative learning experience. Students can access course calendars, campus maps, receive homework alerts, security alerts, and answer in-class surveys and quizzes, among other ACU developed web applications. "Our goal was to create a communications network that would help prepare our students for a connected and mobile world," said Kevin Roberts, chief information officer at ACU. "Receiving an award like this from Alcatel-Lucent for our efforts in that area is exciting and inspires us to continue taking on new challenges in our mobile learning program."
